Hiking.
You could head off into the woods with a paper map and compass. Thankfully this day and age, you have the luxury of satellite views, cell phone mapping and real-time location. There are a number of different apps for hikers, AllTrails and Gaia being the most popular. Both have free and paid versions. It's better to use one app and share routes, photos and comments. We decided to go with AllTrails.
Start by download the App for your cellphone:
AllTrails on Apple
AllTails on Google Play
Once you have downloaded the App and created a free account, you can start finding routes. AllTrails has routes everywhere so you might find some surprising hikes close to home in addition to routes around Haliburton. AllTrails also has a website where you can log into your account and there is some different functions you can do there that are easier than using the app. AllTrails wants you to upgrade to the paid version - $36 a year which is unnecessary but maybe one day.
The best use of the app is on your mobile device so you know where to start on a route, know where it will take you and details about length, elevation change plus you can add photos and ratings to routes. Be aware that navigation is based on cell coverage so location isn't perfect and if you run out battery you're SOL.
Unless you have permission from the landowner, you must stay off private property. All MLCA routes are on Crown Land or are on the private road association's agreed terms. The three road associations have exchanged permissions to use each other's roads for hiking only. Slow lane, Hubbard Montgomery and Minnicock lake roads are owned by incorporated associations with lot owners as members. On Minnicock lake road, the association's ownership ends at the top of Beaver Hill. From there, the road extends into Crown Land for a short distance and then crosses each lot owner's private property. Lots owners have easements to pass on private property. Hiking is open to all lot owners on a lot by lot basis. At this time, permission beyond Beaver Hill extends as far as 2230 Minnicock Lake address.
Depending on the time of year, you might encounter hunters on Crown Land. If you are the person who has no idea when hunting season is, for what creature, using what implement, then it's a good idea to assume hunting season is all the time and wear blaze orange. Do not wear hats with antlers. Orange blaze also makes it easier to find you if you when your cell phone battery runs out and you realize that the forest looks the same in every direction.
